Getting to Vieques

Several major air carriers offer flights to San Juan International airport (SJU).  From SJU, there are several options to get to Vieques (VQS).

The most convenient option is to take a connecting flight from SJU.  This is a 30 minute flight.  Several airlines offer connecting flights from SJU.

There also are two other airports which offer connecting flights – Isla Grande and Ceiba.  Isla Grande is near the cruise port terminal by Old San Juan, and is a short taxi ride from the airport.  Rates are lower than from SJU.  But you have to check schedules, transfer luggage, and allow sufficient time.  Commuter schedules may be less predictable or on demand.  This may be a good option, however, if you are over-nighting or want to tour San Juan before or after visiting Vieques.

Rates are better still out of Ceiba, and the flight is only about 6 minutes.  It takes about an hour  (or longer depending on traffic) to get to the Ceiba airport from SJU.  You can take a taxi/publico van from SJU for about $80 each way.  If you have several people in your party, this can be a cost saving option.  Avis has a rental location at the entrance to the Ceiba airport.  They typically do not charge a drop charge, so you can rent a car one way in each direction (but should ask).  This is a good option if you want to tour the rain forest.  To do the rain forest justice, you probably would want to overnight in the Fajardo or Humacao area.

Cape Air sells commuter books of 10 tickets via their website which can be purchased to reduce the cost, depending on the number of people in your party.  One ticket is used for each way, so a party of five would use a book in one trip.  The coupons are good for a year if you plan to visit again.  This is a way to lower the cost if you have a party of 5 or plan to return.

The most economical way to get to Vieques is via the ferry ($2 per person each way).  The ferry departs from Fajardo, and you would need to take a taxi/publico from the airport.  The ferry takes about 75-90 minutes to get to Vieques.  You also need to allow a similar amount of time to get from SJU to Fajardo.  Be sure to check schedules, and note that the ferry may not run in high winds/waves, and can be sometimes unpredictable.  It also can be crowded during holiday weeks, and can be a bit daunting for a first time visitor.

But, if you have the time, and are adventurous, it is worth trying for the local island experience and views.  The views from the plane are quite spectacular as well, especially on a clear day.

If you take the ferry, you may arrive in Vieques too late to pick-up your car rental until the next day (and will have to rely upon local publicos in Vieques – which can be somewhat iffy).

Reservations are not accepted. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the terminals in Fajardo or Vieques.  Passengers may ride the cargo ferry as space permits.

The Vieques ferry terminal is in Isabel II.  "Publicos" (public taxi/vans) meet arriving passengers and provide transport to all island locations at a reasonable rate.

Rental Cars:  Please note, most Puerto Rico car rental agencies DO NOT allow their vehicles to travel on the ferry to Vieques. Parking facilities are available one block from the ferry terminal in Fajardo.

Arriving in Vieques

You can arrange to have our property manager meet you at the airport or at the house.  If you get a rental car, it may make more sense for you to pick it up first, and then go to the house.  The rental car agencies generally close at 5, so you’ll want to plan to arrive before they close or make special arrangements with them directly to pick up your car.  If you haven’t made arrangements for us to send someone to greet you, or arrangements with your car rental company, there usually are publicos/taxis at the airport that can take you to the car rental agencies or Banana Wind.  Their rates are very reasonable, and should be less than $20 for virtually anywhere on the island.

Jeep/Car Rentals

You’ll want to rent a car to tour the island, access the best beaches, and get around the island generally.  We recommend that you rent a jeep or SUV as Navio Beach and Media Luna Beach, sometimes cannot be accessed via car due to the unpaved road.

You should book your rental car as early as possible, because during peak weeks cars may not be available.  Here are a couple of agencies that we have used.  Maritza’s Car Rental has excellent service, so you may want to start with them.  We’ve also used Vieques Car Rental and Martineau.
